
Screening for Structural Fetal Abnormalities: New Imaging Modalities and Techniques

More than a decade has passed since the publication of the controversial Routine Antenatal Diagnostic Imaging with Ultrasound (RADIUS) Study1 in which there was no reported benefit in perinatal outcome in the practice of routine ultrasonography for low-risk pregnancies.2 Since then, countless rebuttals and criticisms of the trial have followed,3 and today, there remains little doubt of the benefits of universal screening for fetal abnormalities for all pregnancies, including low-risk pregnancies. Routine antenatal ultrasonography for all pregnancies has become an indispensable part of obstetric care.
