Cumulative live-birth rates after IVF
The results of in vitro fertilization (IVF) are usually reported as pregnancies per cycle, whereas to the couples concerned, the important statistic is their chance of having a baby. Data on cumulative live-birth rates after IVF have been reported from a single centre in Boston, United States.
Among 6,164 patients undergoing fresh-embryo, non-donor IVF between 2000 and 2005 (14,248 cycles), the cumulative live-birth rate after six cycles was 51–72%. Among patients younger than 35 years, the corresponding rate was 65–86%. After the age of 40 years, the rate was 23–42%.
IVF is successful in younger women, but success rates decline with age.
