Amoxicillin trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Ear, nose & throat, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections. Anogenital & urethral gonorrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥20 kg 250-500 mg every 8 hr. Childn & infant 8-20 kg 6.7-13.3 mg/kg every 8 hr. Infant 6-8 kg 50-100 mg every 8 hr, ≤6 kg 25-50 mg every 8 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis.
Special Precautions
Serious anaphylactoid reactions. Perform periodic assessment of renal, hepatic & hematopoietic function during prolonged therapy. Risk of superinfections w/ mycotic or bacterial pathogens; discontinue if superinfections occur. Patients w/ known histories of allergy. Patients w/ severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme; hemolytic anemia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura; diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, black hairy tongue, glossitis, stomatitis, sore mouth or tongue; acute interstitial nephritis; moderate increase in AST.
Drug Interactions
Careful monitoring w/ concurrent use of allopurinol or probenecid. Concurrent use w/ chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulfonamides & tetracycline may interfere w/ bactericidal effect.
