Amoxicillin trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of ear, nose & throat, GUT, skin & soft tissue infections. Anogenital & urethral gonorrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥20 kg 250-500 mg. Childn & infants 8-20 kg 6.7-13.3 mg/kg body wt; 6-8 kg 50-100 mg; <6 kg 25-50 mg. All doses to be taken 8 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis.
Special Precautions
Anaphylactoid reactions. Perform periodic assessment of renal, hepatic & haematopoietic function during prolonged therapy. Superinfections. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions; haemolytic disorders; GI disturbances; acute interstitial nephritis; moderate increase in serum conc of AST.
Drug Interactions
Allopurinol or probenecid. Chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulphonamides & tetracycline may interfere w/ the bactericidal effects of amoxicillin.
