Carbimazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment of hyperthyroidism, including prior to surgery or radiotherapy; concomitant therapy w/ radio-iodine treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 30-60 mg daily in divided doses 8 hrly, dosage being gradually reduced to the smallest effective dose, 5-20 mg daily. Childn 2.5-10 mg 8 hrly, reduced dosage gradually according to clinical response.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take consistently w/ or w/o meals.
Contraindications
Lactation.
Special Precautions
Bone marrow depression, hepatic impairment or infection. Neutropenia & agranulocytosis. Tracheal obstruction. Cross-sensitivity w/ other antithyroid agents. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, nausea, headache, GI upset, joint pains, agranulocytsis.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants & heparin. Agranulocytosis-producing medications may increase risk of agranulocytosis.
