Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Treatment of lower resp (pneumonia, bronchitis), upper resp (otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, GUT (pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis), skin & soft tissue (furunculosis, pyoderma, impetigo) infections; gonorrhoea (acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis, cervicitis).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Bronchitis, pneumonia 500 mg bd. Most infections 250 mg bd. UTI 125 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as a single dose. Childn 125 mg bd or 10 mg/kg bd. Max: 250 mg/day. Otitis media in childn ≥2 yr 250 mg bd or 15 mg/kg bd. Max: 500 mg/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Patients w/ anaphylactic reaction to penicillin. History of GI disease, particularly colitis. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, colitis, eosinophilia, transient increase of hepatic enzyme levels.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited tubular secretion w/ probenecid.
