Adult Hypercholesterolemia Initially 10 mg, may be adjusted at 4 wk intervals. Max: 40 mg daily. Reduction of risk of heart attack, stroke or related health problem 20 mg daily. Dose may be lowered if necessary.
Hypersensitivity. Repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains; liver disease; severe kidney problems. Concomitant use of ciclosporin. Pregnancy & lactation. 40 mg dose: Patients w/ impaired thyroid gland; history of repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains, personal or family history of muscle problems or previous history of muscle problems when taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines; moderate kidney problems. Patients of Asian origin. Regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol. Concomitant use of fibrates (eg, gemfibrozil, fenofibrate).
Caution before treatment initiation in case of kidney or liver problems; history of repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains, personal or family history of muscle problems or previous history of muscle problems when taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines; regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol; impaired thyroid gland; concomitant use w/ fibrates; concomitant use w/ HIV drugs eg, lopinavir/ritonavir &/or atazanavir; elderly >70 yr; severe resp failure; Asian origin; concomitant use w/ fusidic acid or use w/in the last 7 days. Perform liver function test before treatment initiation & clinically thereafter if indicated. Increases in HbA1c & fasting serum glucose levels; caution in DM patients or patients at risk of developing DM. Rare post-marketing reports of cognitive impairment associated w/ statin use. Patients intolerant to some sugars. Concomitant use w/ PIs is not recommended.
