Indications and Dosage
Oral
Reversible airways obstruction
Adult: Initially, 0.2-0.4 g daily and increase gradually according to response. Maintenance: 0.8-1.2 g daily in 3-4 divided doses.
Child: 10-14 yrs: 400-800 mg in 4 divided doses; 5-9 yrs: 200-400 mg in 4 divided doses; <5 yrs: 24-36 mg/kg body weight/day in 3 divided doses.
Special Precautions
Peptic ulceration, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias or other CV diseases, epilepsy, hepatic dysfunction, chronic alcoholism, acute febrile illness; smoking; neonates; elderly; pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI irritation and disturbances, CNS stimulation, headache, anxiety, restlessness, dizziness, tremor, palpitations.
Drug Interactions
Xanthines (additive effects), allopurinol, some antiarrhythmics, cimetidine, disulfiram, fluvoxamine, interferon-α, macrolide antibacterials, quinolones, oral contraceptives, tiabendazole, viloxazine, anticonvulsants, ritonavir, rifampicin, sulfinpyrazone, halothane, ketamine, β-blockers.
Action
Description: Choline theophyllinate is a theophylline salt which liberates theophylline in the body. It inhibits the activity of phosphodiesterase, resulting in the intracellular accumulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), thus leading to bronchodilation.
