Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & treatment of duodenal ulcer. Short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer. Treatment of pathological gastric hypersecretion states (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), acute GERD, upper GI bleeding.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Duodenal or benign gastric ulcer 800 mg daily at bedtime OR 400 mg bd (morning & at bedtime) OR 200 mg tds & 400 mg at bedtime OR 400 mg qds (w/ meals & at bedtime). Treatment should be given initially for at least 4 wk benign gastric ulcer: 6 wk. Oesophageal reflux disease  400 mg qds (w/ meals & at bedtime) for 4-8 wks. Gastric hypersecretion state 400 mg qds. Max: 2.4 g. Childn >1 yr 25-30 mg/kg body wt/day in divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to H2-receptors. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Cirrhosis, history of portal systemic encephalopathy, hepatic & renal impairment. Elderly w/ history of peptic ulcer disease. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, dizziness, tiredness, rashes.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline, phenytoin, lidocaine, antiarrhythmias, benzodiazepines, β-blockers & vasodilators. Potentiation of anticoagulant effect.
