Cloxacillin
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci; resp tract infections; skin & soft-tissue infections; disseminated infections caused by pneumococci, group A β-hemolytic streptococci, penicillin G-resistant & G-sensitive staphylococci.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥20 kg  250-500 mg 6 hrly. Childn <20 kg & infant 12.5-25 mg/kg 6 hrly.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of allergy eg, asthma, eczema, hay fever & hives; bleeding disorders; GI disease esp ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis or antibiotic-associated colitis. Infectious mononucleosis. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, nausea & vomiting. Neutropenia & platelet dysfunction; pseudomembranous colitis; interstitial nephritis.
Drug Interactions
Aspirin, sulphamethoxypyridazine & sulphaethidole inhibits serum binding of cloxacillin. Incompatible w/ aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, erythromycin & polymyxin B-sulphate.
