Cyclopentolate HCl
Indications/Uses
To produce mydriasis & cycloplegia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Refraction & eye fundus exam Adult Instill 1 drop, repeat after 10 min. Adolescent & childn 2-16 yr Instill 1 drop, repeat after 5 min if necessary.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Narrow-angle glaucoma or anatomical narrow angle.
Special Precautions
Not for inj or ingestion. Wash hands following each administration. Patients w/ risk of increased IOP; history of prostatic hypertrophy & senile dementia (mainly in prolonged use); premature & small infants; small childn & childn w/ light complexion, Down's syndrome, spastic paralysis, brain damage, or increased risk of seizures. Reversed anti-glaucoma actions of miotics w/ direct or indirect cholinergic effect eg, carbachol & pilocarpine. Estimate angle of anterior chamber prior to use. Avoid driving & use of hazardous machinery while pupils remain dilated. Photosensitivity. Systemic absorption of cyclopentolate may lead to CNS & cardiopulmonary side effects. Contains benzalkonium Cl. Remove contact lenses before instillation, reinsert after at least 15 min. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Increased IOP, burning upon instillation, blurred vision, photophobia, hyperemia, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis; dizziness, sleepiness, disorientation, hallucinations, dry mouth, ataxia, incoherent speech, seizures; bradycardia, tachycardia, vasodilatation; nausea; rash; urinary retention.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited mydriatic effects w/ local administration of cholinergic agonist eye drops (eg, pilocarpine). Increased effect of cholinergic antagonists, antihistamines, or antidepressants.
