Always take Dapsone tablets exactly as the doctor has prescribed. If unsure, check with the doctor or pharmacist.
Swallow the tablets with some water.
The usual doses are: Adults and children over 12 years: Multibacillary leprosy: 100 mg for at least two years.
Paucibacillary leprosy: 100 mg daily for at least six months.
Malaria prophylaxis: 100 mg weekly with 12.5 mg pyrimethamine.
Dermatitis herpetiformis: Initially 50 mg daily which may be gradually increased to 300 mg daily and then reduced to a usual maintenance dose of 25 mg-50 mg daily.
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia: In combination with trimethoprim, 50-100 mg daily or 100 mg twice weekly or 200 mg once weekly.
Elderly: In case of damaged liver the doctor may give a lower dose.
Children 6-12 years: Multibacillary leprosy: 50 mg for at least two years.
Paucibacillary leprosy: 50 mg for at least six months.
Continue to take them for as long as the doctor has prescribed, it may be dangerous to stop without their advice.
In case of missed dose: If the patient forgets to take the tablets: Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. If the patient forgets to take a dose take it as soon as remembered it and then take the next dose at the right time.
