Therapeutic: Monotherapy iron chelation treatment for chronic iron overload, e.g. transfusional hemosiderosis, as seen in thalassemia major, sideroblastic anemia, auto-immune hemolytic anemia, and other chronic anemias; idiopathic (primary) hemochromatosis in patients in whom concomitant disorders (e.g. severe anemia, cardiac disease, hypoproteinemia) preclude phlebotomy; iron overload associated with porphyria cutanea tarda in patients unable to tolerate phlebotomy.
Treatment for acute iron poisoning.
Treatment for chronic aluminum overload in patients with end-stage renal failure (under maintenance dialysis) with aluminum-related bone disease; dialysis encephalopathy or aluminum-related anemia.
Diagnostic: Diagnosis of iron or aluminum overload.
