Indications/Uses
Treatment of maturity onset diabetes not satisfactorily controlled by diet & other drugs where the risk of lactic acidosis is minimised by excluding predisposing factors, esp reduced renal, hepatic or CV function. It may be used both as primary & adjunctive therapy, either alone or in combination w/ insulin or sulfonylureas.
Dosage/Direction for Use
500 mg bd-tds. Max: 3 g daily in divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Diabetic coma & serious ketoacidosis. Marked renal function impairment. Chronic liver disease, cardiac failure. Recent MI, alcoholism, conditions associated w/ hypoxaemia. History of lactic acidosis.
Special Precautions
Elderly. Patients who are suffering from serious infections, trauma or undergoing surgery or IV angiography.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; lactic acidosis.
Drug Interactions
Impairs absorption of vit B12. Alcohol, diuretics. May potentiate hypoglycaemic effects of sulfonylureas.
