Concise Prescribing Info
Heart failure; irregular heartbeat or rhythm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Rapid digitalisation, atrial fibrillation or flutter 0.75-1.5 mg over 24 hr in divided doses. Maintenanace: 125-250 mcg daily. Heart failure (sinus rhythm) 62.5-125 mcg daily. Reduce dose if digoxin had been administered in the preceding 2 wk.
Hypersensitivity to cardiac glycosides. Inflammation of the heart, enlargement of heart muscle, problems in conduction of electrical impulses in the heart or irregular heartbeat eg, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Special Precautions
Discontinue in case skin rash and swelling of the mouth, tongue & throat causing difficulty swallowing or breathing occurs. Resp disorders; hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypercalcemia; recent heart attack, CHF, abnormal heart rhythm; stomach or bowel problems. Lactose intolerance. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hematologic changes, unusual bruising, nose bleed, infections; breast swelling in men; disorientation, confusion, forgetfulness, delirium, psychosis, depression, fits; headache, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, sleepiness, bad dreams, restlessness, nervousness, agitation; visual disturbances; irregular or fast heartbeat; loss of appetite, diarrhoea, abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
St. John's wort; telmisartan, prazosin, captopril, nifedipine, nisoldipine, verapamil, diltiazem, nitroprusside, hydralazine, acetazolamide, furosemide, triamterene, spironolactone, amiloride; sulfasalazine, penicillamine, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine; atorvastatin, colestipol, colestyramine; kaolin, antacids; amiodarone, disopyramide, flecainide, moracizine, propafenone, quinidine, β-blockers eg, propranolol, atenolol; tetracycline, azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, telithromycin, neomycin, rifampicin, trimethoprim, amphotericin, itraconazole; nefazodone, trazodone, lithium, alprazolam, diazepam; acarbose; phenytoin, topiramate; quinine; Ca salts & vit D; carbimazole; ciclosporin; corticosteroids eg, prednisolone, hydrocortisone; drugs for cancer; edrophonium, suxamethonium, pancuronium, tizanidine; NSAIDs; salbutamol; carbenoxolone, omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, sucralfate.
