Indications/Uses
Maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patient >12 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 200-400 mcg bd, adjusted as necessary. Max: 800 mcg bd.
Contraindications
Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required.
Special Precautions
C. albicans infections of the mouth & pharynx. Not for the rapid relief of bronchospasm or other acute episodes of asthma. Increased susceptibility to infections (eg, chickenpox, measles). Caution w/ TB, untreated systemic fungal, bacterial, viral or parasitic infections & ocular herpes simplex. Deaths due to adrenal insufficiency reported w/ transfer from systemic to inhaled corticosteroids. Transfer to inhalation therapy may unmask allergic conditions. Observe for systemic corticosteroid w/drawal effects. Hypercorticism & adrenal suppression. Caution w/ major risk factors for decreased bone mineral content. May cause reduction in growth velocity in paed patients. Glaucoma, increased IOP & cataracts. Bronchospasms w/ immediate increase in wheezing. Systemic eosinophilic conditions & vasculitis consistent w/ Churg-Strauss syndrome. Hypersensitivity reactions. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Resp infection; nasopharyngitis, headache, fever, sinusitis, pain, nausea/vomiting, insomnia, dry mouth, wt gain.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma levels w/ oral ketoconazole. Inhibition of metabolism & increased exposure w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors. Caution w/ ketoconazole & other known strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, clarithromycin, itraconazole, nefazodone).
