Amitriptyline HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of depression. Also for treatment of bed-wetting.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Depression Adult Initially 75-150 mg/day in divided doses. Hospitalised patient Initially 100-200 mg/day, Elderly 50-100 mg/day. Bed-wetting Childn Individualised dosage.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of heart attack. Patient taking or have taken MAOIs w/in the last 14 days or taking cisapride. Childn & adolescent <18 yr. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Heart or blood vessel problems, liver problems, glaucoma, urinary problems, thyroid problems, seizures or fits, any mental illness other than depression (eg, schizophrenia). Surgery. Electroshock therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reaction. Fast or irregular hear beat, larger breast than normal, tingling or numbness of the hands or feet, uncontrolled movements, difficulty in passing urine, signs of frequent infections; jaundice, unusual bruising or bleeding, feeling anxious, restless or confused, abnormal ideas, hallucinations, sudden switch of mood to one of excitement, overactivity, talkativeness & uninhibited behavior.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs (eg, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, moclobemide, selegine). Abnormal heart rhythm w/ cisapride. SSRIs, medicines used to treat high BP, anticholinergics, medicines used to treat mental disorders, quinidine & flecainide, medicines used to control an irregular heart beat, cimetidine, sedatives, antianxiety medicines, medicines for epilepsy, thyroid medicines, disulfiram, tramadol.
