Loperamide HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of sudden (acute) diarrhoea (including traveller's diarrhoea).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly 2 tab at once, then 1 tab after every loose stool. Max: 8 tab in 24 hr. Childn >5 yr Initially 1 tab, then 1 tab after each loose stool. Max: 9-11 yr (60-95 lbs) ≤3 tab daily 5-8 yr (48-59 lbs) ≤2 tab daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Blood in stools, high fever (>39°C), inflammation of the lower bowel eg, ulcerative or pseudomembranous colitis, constipation, swollen abdomen. Lactation. Childn <5 yr.
Special Precautions
Dehydration esp in childn; AIDS patients; abdominal swelling or bulging. Pregnancy. Liver problem. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Taste perversion, constipation & bloated abdomen, difficulty urinating. Rarely, oversensitivity. Abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting, tiredness, dizziness or drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence.
