Indications/Uses
Normalization of K deficiency conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
5-12 cap daily (corresponding to 40-96 mmol K ions). Can be started w/ 2 cap tds, then adjusted according to K requirement, if necessary.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Conditions linked to hyperkalaemia (eg, restricted excretory kidney function, dehydration, Addison's disease, Adynamia episodica hereditaria, sickle cell anaemia, metabolic imbalances in the acid region); elevated blood K level due to movement of K from the intracellular to the extracellular space ie, from cells to the blood.
Special Precautions
Known impairment of the oesophagus or the GI tract. Check mineral & acid base balances, cardiac rhythm & kidney function, particularly in elderly patients, prior to treatment & during treatment initially in shorter intervals & later in longer intervals. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Upper abdominal & intestinal symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Risk of hyperkalaemia w/ ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, aldosterone antagonists, K-saving diuretics or NSAIDs & peripheral analgesics eg, indomethacin. Increased risk of GI effects w/ anticholinergics.
