Indications/Uses
Listed in Dosage.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute sinusitis 500 mg once daily for 10-14 days. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 250-500 mg once daily for 7-10 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 500 mg once or bd for 7-14 days. Uncomplicated UTI 250 g once daily for 3 days. Complicated UTI including pyelonephritis 250 mg once daily for 7-10 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg once daily for 28 days. Skin & soft tissue infections 250 mg once daily OR 500 mg once or bd for 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take at least 2 hr before or after Fe salts, antacids & sucralfate. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin & quinolones. Epilepsy. History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & growing adolescents.
Special Precautions
Methicillin resistant S. aureus. Tendinitis & tendon rupture. Clostridium difficile-associated disease. G6PD deficiency. Angioedema, anaphylactic shock. Hypoglycaemia. Photosensitisation. Monitor coagulation test concomitant w/ vit K antagonists. Psychotic reactions or disease. Congenital long QT syndrome. Concomitant w/ class IA & III antiarrhythmics, TCAs, macrolides, antipsychotics. Hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia. Heart failure, MI, bradycardia. Peripheral neuropathy. False-positive results for opiates. Hepatobiliary disorders. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, nausea, hepatic enzyme elevation. May cause tendinitis or tendon rupture. Neuromuscular blocking activity & may exacerbate muscle weakness in persons w/ myasthenia gravis.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption w/ Fe salts, Mg- or Al-containing anatcids. Reduced bioavailability w/ sucralfate. Lowering of cerebral seizure threshold w/ theophylline, NSAIDs. Increased conc w/ fenbufen. Reduced renal clearance w/ cimetidine & probenecid. Increased ciclosporin conc. Increased coagulation tests &/or bleeding concomitant w/ warfarin. Reduced contraceptive effect.
