Indications/Uses
Treatment of asthma as an add-on therapy in patient w/ mild to moderate persistent asthma who are inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids & in whom "as needed" short acting β-agonists provide inadequate clinical control of asthma. Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Prophylaxis of asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥15 yr Asthma or w/ asthma & concomitant seasonal allergic rhinitis 10 mg once daily. Paed patient 6-14 yr 5 mg once daily. Doses are to be taken in the evening.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Do not use to treat acute asthma attacks. Do not substitute for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Monitor for symptoms of eosinophilia, vasculitic rash, worsening  pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications &/or neuropathy. Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache. Less frequently, abdominal or stomach pain, asthenia or fatigue, cough, dental pain, dizziness, dyspepsia, fever, gastroenteritis, infectious (abdominal or stomach pain), nasal congestion & skin rash; elevated hepatic enzymes (asymptomatic).
Drug Interactions
Caution, particularly in childn, when in concomitant w/ CYP 3A4 inducers eg phenytoin, phenobarb, rifampicin. Alter the metabolism of drugs metabolised by CYP2C8 (eg, paclitaxel, rosiglitazone & repaglinide).

R03DC03 - montelukast ; Belongs to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists. Used in the systemic treatment of obstructive airway diseases.
