Morphine sulphate
Analgesic for severe & very severe pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult IM/SC 5-30 mg. May be repeated 4-6 hrly if necessary. IV 2.5-10 mg slowly. Dilute w/ isotonic NaCl soln if necessary. Epidural 1-4 mg. Dilute w/ 10-15 mL isotonic NaCl soln if necessary. Intrathecal 0.1-1 mg. Dilute w/ 1-4 mL isotonic NaCl if necessary. Childn IM/SC 0.05-0.2 mg/kg body wt. Max: 15 mg. IV/Epidural 0.05-0.1 mg/kg body wt. Dilute w/ isotonic NaCl soln. Intrathecal 0.02 mg/kg body wt. Dilute w/ isotonic NaCl soln. Single doses during IM, SC & IV may be repeated 4-5 hrly.
Hypersensitivity. Intestinal occlusion (ileus).
Special Precautions
Euphoria, development of dependence, withdrawal syndrome, reduced general condition, delayed GI passage, adrenocortical insufficiency. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Resp depression, sedation, headache, dizziness, sweating, pupillary contraction, cerebral seizures. Euphoria, dysphoria, changes in activation, & cognitive & sensory ability, insomnia. Nausea, dry mouth, colic, micturitional disturbances, bronchospasms, vomiting, anorexia, altered taste, constipation. Urticaria, pruritus, exanthema, peripheral oedema, anaphylactic & anaphylactoid reactions. Facial flushing, chills, palpitations, general weakness leading to fainting, heart failure.
Drug Interactions
Other CNS depressants, cimetidine, muscle relaxants, MAOIs. Avoid concomitant administration of potent analgesics & mood-influencing prep in case of epidural & intrathecal administration.
