Indications/Uses
Treatment of nicotine dependence, as an aid to smoking cessation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Smoker consuming <20 cigarettes daily Suck 1 loz. Most people suck 8-12 loz daily. Max: Not >20 loz daily. Gradually taper daily dose until completely stop. Treatment duration: Not >6 mth.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Suck until the taste becomes strong. Then, lodge the loz between the gum & cheek. When the taste fades, start sucking it again. Repeat until the loz completely dissolves (about 30 min). Do not chew/swallow.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Heart disease, stroke, DM, hyperthyroidism, persistent indigestion, severe sore throat, stomach ulcer, HTN, angina pectoris, circulatory problems, liver & kidney disease, phaeochromocytoma, throat and mouth inflammation, low Na diet.
Adverse Reactions
Slight irritation of throat & increased salivation. Excessive swallowing of saliva containing nicotine may cause hiccups. Indigestion or heartburn may be in those susceptible. Nausea, faintness & headache, & insomnia may be experienced for those who do not inhale when smoking. Wind, dry mouth. Palpitations & changes in heart rhythm are less common.
Drug Interactions
Avoid coffee, acidic drinks or soft drinks for 15 min prior to sucking the loz.
