Fentanyl citrate
Indications/Uses
Management of breakthrough pain (BTP) in adults who are already receiving maintenance opioid therapy for chronic cancer pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 100 mcg then titrated to an effective dose. Max: 4 doses/day, 800 mcg/dose. Wait for at least 4 hr before treating another episode.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe resp depression or obstructive lung condition. Treatment of acute pain other than BTP. Patients w/o maintenance opioid therapy.
Special Precautions
Resp depression, COPD, increased intracranial pressure, bradycardia, potential for abuse & tolerance, serotonin syndrome. Nasal use only. Avoid use in case of recurrent episodes of epistaxis or nasal discomfort. Contains propyl parahydroxybenzoate; may cause allergic reactions. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Hepatic or renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Disorientation; dysgeusia, dizziness, somnolence, headache; epistaxis, rhinorrhoea, nasal discomfort, nausea & vomiting, constipation, pruritus. Resp & circulatory depression, hypotension, shock.
