Indications/Uses
Treatment of patients w/ hypokalemia, w/ or w/o metabolic alkalosis; in digitalis intoxication; & in patients w/ hypokalemic familial periodic paralysis. Prevention of hypokalemia in patients at risk eg, digitalized patients or w/ significant cardiac arrhythmias. Reserved for those who cannot tolerate or refuse to take liqd or effervescent K prep or for patients in whom there is a problem of compliance w/ these prep.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Treatment of hypokalemia 40-100 mEq/day. Divide dose if >20 mEq/day is given. Max single dose: 20 mEq. Prevention of hypokalemia 20 mEq/day.
Contraindications
Hyperkalemia; cardiac patient w/ esophageal compression due to an enlarged left atrium; patient in whom there is structural, pathological or pharmacologic cause for arrest or delay in tab passage through the GIT.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ chronic renal disease or any other condition which impairs K excretion. Can produce ulcerative &/or stenotic lesions of the GIT. Discontinue immediately if severe vomiting, abdominal pain, distention or GI bleeding occurs. Patients w/ metabolic acidosis should be treated w/ alkalinizing K salt. Patients w/ cardiac disease, renal disease or acidosis requires careful attention to acid-base balance & appropriate monitoring of serum electrolytes, ECG & clinical status of the patient. Pregnancy. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hyperkalemia, upper & lower GI disturbances. Nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain/discomfort & diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Risk of severe hyperkalemia w/ K salts & K-sparing diuretics. May produce K retention w/ ACE inhibitors.
