Budesonide
Indications/Uses
Seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis; vasomotor rhinitis. Prevention against nasal polyps after polypectomy. Symptomatic treatment in nasal polyposis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualised dosage. Rhinitis Adult & childn ≥6 yr Initially 256 mcg daily as single or in 2 divided doses. This implies 128 mcg into each nostril in the morning, or 64 mcg into each nostril morning & evening. Symptomatic treatment & prevention of nasal polyps 256 mcg daily as single or in 2 divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hypercortisolism, Cushing’s syndrome, Cushing-like symptoms, adrenal suppression &/or delayed growth in childn. Nasal fungal or herpes infections. Disturbances in hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis. Severe liver impairment, pulmonary TB. Avoid contact w/ the eyes. Concomitant w/ ketoconazole & potent CYP3A4 inhibitors. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Local irritation, epistaxis, slight haemorrhagic nasal secretion.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ ketoconazole, potent CYP3A4 inhibitors.
