Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma in adults & ped patients ≥12 mth. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in patients ≥6 yr. Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients ≥2 yr & perennial allergic rhinitis in patients ≥6 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Asthma Once daily in the evening. Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab or 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules, 12-23 mth 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction Should be taken at least 2 hr before exercise. Patients already taking montekulast daily for another indication should not take an additional dose to prevent EIB. Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab. Allergic rhinitis Once daily. Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab or 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules. Perennial allergic rhinitis Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab or 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules, 6-23 mth 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Oral granules: May be administered directly into the mouth or mixed w/ a spoonful of cold or room temp soft foods (only applesauce, carrots, rice, or ice cream should be used), or dissolved in 1 tsp (5 mL) of cold or room temp baby formula/breast milk. Do not dissolve in other liqd. Take immediately (w/in 15 min).
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks, including status asthmaticus. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Be alert for neuropsychiatric events. Patients w/ asthma may present w/ systemic eosinophilia. Pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients <12 mth w/ asthma, <6 mth w/ perennial allergic rhinitis, & <6 yr w/ exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Chewable tab: Phenylketonuric patients should be cautious to the phenylalanine content.
Adverse Reactions
Upper resp infection, fever, headache, pharyngitis, cough, abdominal pain, diarrhea, otitis media, influenza, rhinorrhea, sinusitis, otitis.

R03DC03 - montelukast ; Belongs to the class of leukotriene receptor antagonists. Used in the systemic treatment of obstructive airway diseases.
