Xylometazoline HCl
Detumescing the nasal mucosa in the event of colds & attacks of runny colds (vasomotor rhinitis), allergic rhinitis. Facilitating the flow of secretion in inflammation of the paranasal sinuses as well as in catarrh of the tubal middle ear associated w/ colds.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & school-age childn ≥6 yr 1 puff into each nostril up to tds. Recommended single dose should not be given more than tds. Do not use for >7 days.
Hypersensitivity. Dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis sicca). Condition after trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or other surgical interventions, which expose the dura mater. Childn <6 yr.
Special Precautions
Increased IOP, especially narrow-angle glaucoma; severe CV diseases (eg, CHD, HTN); pheochromocytoma; metabolic disorders (eg, hyperthyroidism, DM); porphyria; prostatic hypertrophy. Risk of nasal mucosa atrophy in chronic cold sufferers. Patients treated w/ MAOIs or w/ other potentially BP-increasing drugs. Avoid prolonged use & overdosing. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Burning & dryness of the nasal mucosa, sneezing.
Drug Interactions
TCAs; tranylcypromine-type MAOIs; BP increasing medications may lead to HTN.
