Ulipristal is used to treat moderate to severe symptoms of uterine fibroids (non-cancerous tumours of the womb).
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Ulipristal exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of medicine.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you miss a dose by more than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- vaginal bleeding not caused by uterine fibroids
- cancer of the womb, cervix (neck of the womb), ovary or breast
as Ulipristal may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Ulipristal, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven and appropriate birth control methods while taking Ulipristal (e.g. condom).
Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with this medicine.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- asthma
- kidney disease
- liver disease
Ulipristal does not lower the risk of getting an HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
Pregnancy tests must be done before taking this medicine. Your doctor may need to regularly examine your endometrium (lining of your womb). Your doctor will advise you how often you need to have these tests.
Ulipristal may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: decreased or absence of menstruation, thickening of the lining of the womb, breast pain, headache, spinning sensation, tiredness, nausea, stomach ache, muscle pain, acne, hot flushes and weight gain.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- birth control pills e.g. norethindrone, levonorgestrel
- medicines for heart disease e.g. digoxin
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. dabigatran etexilate
- medicines for epilepsy e.g. phenytoin, fosphenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine
- medicines for depression e.g. nefazodone
- certain antibiotics e.g. rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, nevirapine, ritonavir
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- herbal medicines e.g. St. John’s wort
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ulipristal.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
