Why do I need this medicine?
Velaglucerase alfa is used as a long-term enzyme replacement therapy to treat Gaucher disease type 1 (a genetic disorder caused by a missing or defective enzyme called glucocerebrosidase).
How do I use this medicine?
Velaglucerase alfa is to be given by intravenous infusion (into the vein) over a period of 1-2 hours. It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.

Your doctor or nurse will administer the injection for you.

The dose of Velaglucerase alfa will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of your treatment depending on your condition and response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Velaglucerase alfa.

If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you ever had an immune response or allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Velaglucerase alfa or any other similar medicines used as an enzyme replacement therapy.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • You may need to have routine blood tests (e.g. complete blood count, liver function, immunoglobulin G antibody concentration). Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring of signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction may be needed while you are being treated with this medicine.
  • MRI or CT scan of your liver and spleen, and bone density test may also be performed.
What side effects could I experience?
Velaglucerase alfa may cause any of the following side effects: headache, dizziness, bone pain, joint pain, back pain, weakness, nausea, stomach pain, fever, flushing, and pain or swelling at the site of injection.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Reconstituted solution is stable for 24 hours. Store between 2-8°C.

Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
