Indications/Uses
Numbs the skin before putting in the needle (eg, inj or blood test), minor skin operations, skin graft, cleansing or debridement of leg ulcers. Numbs the genitals before an inj, medical procedures eg, warts removal.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescents ≥12 yr Before small procedures (eg, putting in needle or minor skin operations) Put on to the skin in a thick layer. 2 g for 1-5 hr under a dressing. Before hospital procedures (eg, split-skin grafting) that require deeper skin anaesth 1.5-2 g for each area of skin that is 10 cm2 in size, applied for 2-5 hr under a dressing. Larger areas of newly shaven skin before outpatient procedures (eg, hair removal techniques) 1.5 g for each area of skin that is 10 cm2 in size, applied for 1-5 hr under a dressing. Should not be used on an area of newly shaven skin >600 cm2. Max dose: 60 g. Genital skin before inj of local anesth (adult men only) 1 g for each area of the skin that is 10 cm2 in size, applied for 15 min under a dressing. Genital skin before minor skin surgery (eg, wart removal for adults only) 5-10 g for 10 min w/o dressing. Leg ulcers before cleaning or debridement 1-2 g for each area of skin that is 10 cm2 to a total of 10 g, under an airtight dressing eg, plastic wrap, for 30-60 min before cleaning the ulcer. Can be used for up to 15 times over a period of 1-2 mth. Childn Before small procedures (eg, putting needle in or minor skin operations) Application time: approx 1 hr. Childn 7-11 yr Up to 20 g on a total skin area not larger than 200 cm2 in size. Application time: approx 1 hr, max: 5 hr. Childn 1-6 yr Up to 10 g on a total skin area not larger than 100 cm2 in size. Application time: approx 1 hr, max: 5 hr. Infants 3-12 mth Up to 2 g on a total skin area not larger than 20 cm2 in size. Application time: approx 1 hr, max: 4 hr. Newborn infants & infants <3 mth Up to 1 g on a skin area not larger than 10 cm2 in size. Application time: 1 hr, not more. Only a single dose should be given in any 24 hr period. Childn >3 mth Max: 2 doses at least 12 hr apart in any 24 hr period. Atopic dermatitis Application time: 30 min.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Anemia; G6PD deficiency; methaemoglobinaemia; atopic dermatitis. Pre-term newborn infant. Childn <12 mth & being treated w/ other medicines affecting blood pigment levels. Contains polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil. Do not use on cuts, grazes or wounds, excluding leg ulcers; skin rash or eczema; in or near the eyes; inside the nose, ear or mouth; in the anus; on genitals of childn. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Redness, slight swelling, pale skin where the cream was used.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ sulphonamides eg, sulfamethoxazole; other local anaesth; medicines for arrhythmia eg, mexiletine or amiodarone.
