Indications/Uses
Herpes simplex infections of skin & mucous membranes. Treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) & varicella (chickenpox) infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Herpes simplex Adult Treatment: 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days. Prophylaxis: 200 mg qds. Herpes zoster & varicella Adult Treatment: 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Childn >6 yr 800 mg qds, 2-6 yr 400 mg qds, <2 yr 200 mg qds. Max: 800 mg qds. Treatment duration: 5 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Raised liver enzymes, haematological & encephalopathic changes; rashes, GI disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid.
