Impetigo & Ecthyma (Pediatric) Disease Summary

Last updated: 29 November 2021

Overview

Impetigo is a very contagious, superficial, bacterial skin infection that easily spreads among people in close contact. While ecthyma is deeply ulcerated form of impetigo that extends to the dermis.
Characteristic of impetigo is the production of discharge that forms “honey-colored” crusts. In ecthyma, the ulcers are "punched-out" with yellow crust and elevated violaceous margins.
Diagnosis of impetigo and ecthyma can be made by clinical presentation, but direct gram staining from pus/crust is recommended to confirm infection.
The goals of pharmacologic therapy include the relief of symptoms and reduction of the duration of the infection, the prevention of contagious spread, and prevention of recurrence.
