Ceftriaxone disodium
Indications/Uses
Sepsis, meningitis, infection of the lower resp tract, kidney & UTI, skin, bone, intra-abdominal, septicaemia, uncomplicated gonorrhoea, peri-op prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily. May be increased to 4 g daily in severe infections. Infant & childn <12 yr 50-70 mg/kg/day. Max: 2 g daily in divided doses 12 hrly. Peri-op prophylaxis 1-2 g as a single dose 30-90 min pre-op. Gonorrhoeae 250 mg IM as a single dose. Meningitis Infant & childn Initially 100 mg/kg/day (max: 4 g daily) in divided doses 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Neonates w/ jaundice, hypoalbuminemia, acidosis or other conditions eg, prematurity.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. History of GI disorders especially colitis. Severe kidney & liver dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, skin reactions, haematological changes. Headache, dizziness, increased liver enzyme, oliguria, increased serum creatinine, mycosis in genital tract, trembling, anaphylaxis reaction.
