Bismuth subcitrate is used to treat stomach or small bowel ulcers.
This medicine is used together with other medicines to treat an infection caused by the H. pylori, a type of bacteria usually found in the stomach.
Take Bismuth subcitrate exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have moderate to severe kidney disease as Bismuth subcitrate may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are going for radiographic diagnostic procedures (e.g. x-rays) of the gastrointestinal tract (mouth, food pipe, stomach, bowels, anus), inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.
Bismuth subcitrate may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, rash and itching.
This medicine may cause your stool and tongue to change to a darker colour. This is harmless, do not be alarmed.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- certain antibiotics e.g. tetracyclines
- stomach medicines e.g. omeprazole
- medicine for pain, fever, and inflammation e.g. aspirin
- probenecid (medicine for gout)
This medicine should not be taken with antacids as antacids could reduce the effectiveness of this medicine. If you must take antacids, take between meals at least 2 hours after you have taken this medicine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Do not take Bismuth subcitrate with milk, fruit or fruit juice. Milk, fruit and fruit juice reduce the effectiveness of Bismuth subcitrate when taken at the same time.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
