Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Severe asthma or while reducing oral corticosteroid Adult & childn ≥12 yr 1-2 mg twice daily. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 0.5-1 mg twice daily. Maintenance: Individualized dosage. Recommended doses: Adult 0.5-1 mg twice daily. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for rapid relief of bronchospasm & not suitable as sole therapy in the treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute exacerbations of asthma where intensive measures are required. Patients being transferred from oral corticosteroids to budesonide; who have required high dose emergency corticosteroid therapy, prolonged treatment at the highest recommended dose of inhaled corticosteroids or receiving medication metabolized by CYP3A4. May regain rhinitis & eczema when transferred from oral therapy. HPA axis suppression (including dose-dependent), bone density reduction, cataracts, glaucoma, retardation of growth rate in childn. Monitor for signs of adrenal dysfunction. Not to be used as long-term treatment in childn. Initial reduction of growth velocity w/in the 1st yr of treatment may occur in childn. Patients should be titrated to the lowest effective dose. May mask some signs of existing infection & new infections may appear. Special care is needed in patients w/ active or quiescent pulmonary TB or fungal, bacterial or viral infections of the resp system. Not to be used w/ positive pressure delivery systems in pulmonary conditions involving pneumothorax, air cysts or mediastinal emphysema unless special drainage is performed. Severely compromised liver function. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Hoarseness, sore, mild irritated throat, irritation of the tongue & mouth, dry mouth, oral candidiasis; cough.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole.
