Indications/Uses
Additional therapy in association w/ diet in patients w/ DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 50 mg 3 times daily or ½ of 100-mg tab 3 times daily. Subsequently, two 50-mg tab 3 times daily or 100 mg 3 times daily up to two 100-mg 3 times daily. May be increased after 4-8 wk.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately before or during meals. Swallow whole w/ some liqd.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Chronic intestinal disorders associated w/ distinct digestion & absorption disturbances. Inflammatory bowel disease. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <25 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Patient <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Monitor liver function during 1st 6-12 mth of therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence; diarrhea, GI & abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Decrease in blood glucose values w/ sulphonylurea, metformin & insulin. May affect bioavailability w/ digoxin. Simultaneous administration of cholestyramine, intestinal absorbents & digestive enzyme products should be avoided. Loss of glucose control w/ diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid products, estrogens, OCs, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics & INH. Reduction of post prandial blood glucose w/ neomycin.
