Indications/Uses
Reduction of elevated total and LDL-C levels in patients w/ primary hypercholesterolemia when response to diet and other non-pharmacological measures has been inadequate. Reduction of elevated cholesterol levels in patient w/ combined hypercholesterolemia & hypertriglyceridemia when hypercholesterolemia is the abnormality of more concern.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 20 mg/day. Dose range: 20-80 mg/day in single or divided doses. Max: 80 mg/day. Patient taking immunosuppressants 10 mg/day. Max: 20 mg/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Active liver disease or persistent elevations of serum transaminases. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients who are alcoholics or have past history of liver disease. Perform liver function test during therapy. Rhabdomyolysis patients w/ or w/o renal dysfunction on concomitant use of erythromycin. Prepubertal patients & childn.
Adverse Reactions
Myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, arthralgia; cranial nerves dysfunction, tremor, vertigo, memory loss, paresthesia, peripheral nerve palsy, peripheral neuropathy, anxiety, insomnia, depression, hypersensitivity reactions, GI disturbances, alopecia, pruritus, skin changes, gynecomastia, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, progressive cataracts, ophthalmoplegia, elevated transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, glutamyl transpeptidase & bilirubin; thyroid function abnormalities.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants, niacin or immunosuppressants.
ATC Classification
C10AA02 - lovastatin ; Belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
