Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Monotherapy or adjuvant therapy to diet & exercise to improve glycemic control in patients w/ type 2 DM. Can be given in combination therapy w/ sulfonylurea or insulin to improve blood sugar.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Initially 500 mg once daily in the evening. May be gradually increased until max: 2,000 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. CHF, acute or chronic metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. Patients w/ kidney impairment (serum creatinine 1.5 mg/dL in male & 1.4 mg/dL in female).
Special Precautions
Acute or chronic alcoholism, patients who are undergoing radiologic exam w/ any IV contrast. Patients w/ liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, abdominal distention, dyspepsia/heartburn, flatulence; dizziness, headache; upper resp tract infection; taste disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Glyburide, furosemide, nifedipine, cationic agents (eg, amiloride, digoxin, morphine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, ranitidine, triamterene, trimethoprim, vancomycin), other drugs w/ any tendency to cause hyperglycaemia including thiazide & other diuretics, corticosteroid, phenothiazine, thyroid products, estrogen, OC, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetic agents, Ca channel blocker, INH.
