Valsartan
Indications/Uses
HTN, heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) in patients intolerant of ACE inhibitors. Post-MI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN 80 mg once daily, may be increased to 160 mg/day or a diuretic may be added if BP is not adequately controlled. Heart failure Initially 40 mg twice daily. Max: 320 mg daily in divided doses. Post-MI Initally 20 mg twice daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Severe hepatic impairment, cirrhosis, biliary obstruction. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Na or vol-depletion, patients w/ unilateral or bilateral renal artery stenosis, renal & hepatic impairment, biliary obstructive disorders, heart failure or post-MI, severe heart failure whose renal function depends on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, or under triple combination therapy of ACE inhibitor, β-blocker & angiotensin receptor blocker. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness, viral & upper resp tract infections, cough, diarrhea, fatigue, rhinitis, sinusitis, back & abdominal pain, nausea, pharyngitis, arthralgia.
Drug Interactions
K-sparing diuretics, K supplements.
