Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Trichomoniasis Male 500 mg once daily for 10 consecutive days. Female 750 mg once daily for 10 consecutive days. Amoebiasis Adult 500-750 mg 3 times daily for 5-10 consecutive days. Childn 125 mg/10 kg 3 times daily for 5-10 consecutive days. Anaerobic infection Adult 500 mg 3 times daily for 5-7 consecutive days. Childn 62.5 mg/10 kg 3 times daily for 5-7 consecutive days. Infusion Adult 500 mg by IV infusion every 8 hr. Childn 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hr. Prevention of post-op abdominal infections, gynaecology Adult 500 mg by IV infusion pre-op, followed by 500 mg orally every 8 hr. Childn 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hr. Supp Adult 1 supp into the rectum 3 times daily for 7 days or longer. Childn 1 supp or 15 mg/kg 3 times daily into the rectum.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Blood dyscrasias. Active CNS disease.
Special Precautions
1st trimester of pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, anorexia, coated tongue, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, pruritus, skin rash. Rarely, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic effects, urethral discomfort & darkening of urine. Leukopenia. Peripheral neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
W/ alcohol, metronidazole may provoke a disulfiram-like reaction. Metronidazole enhances the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.

P01AB01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of nitroimidazole derivatives antiprotozoals. Used in the treatment amoebiasis and other protozoal diseases.
J01XD01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of imidazole derivative antibacterials. Used in the systemic treatment of infections.
