Moxifloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, complicated skin & skin structure infections which need initial parenteral therapy & followed by oral therapy; allergy to penicillin; intra-abdominal infections due to polymicrobial infections in patients w/ intolerance to the alternative agents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
400 mg once daily. Duration of therapy: Acute exacerbation in chronic bronchitis 5-10 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 10 days. Acute sinusitis 7 days. Complicated skin & skin structure infections 7-21 days. Complicated intra-abdominal infections 5-14 days. Mild to moderate pelvic inflammatory disease 14 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ history or existing tendon disease due to quinolone therapy. Documented of congenital prolonged QT interval. Electrolyte imbalance especially hypokalemia. Bradycardia. Clinically relevant heart failure w/ reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. History of symptomatic arrhythmia. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ CNS disease. Discontinue treatment when inflammatory & rupture of tendon or arryhthmia occur. May prolong QT interval. Patients w/ myasthenia gravis. Family history or existing G6PD deficiency. Patients w/ complicated pelvic disorders. Not recommended for treatment of MRSA infections. Patients w/ psychosis or a history of psychiatric disorders. Severe liver dysfunction. Female. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Mycotic superinfections, blood & lymphatic system disorders; impaired immune system; psychiatric disorders; neurological disorders; visual disorders; ear & labyrinth disturbances; CV disorders; resp, thorax & mediastinal disorders; GI disturbances; hepatobiliary disorders; skin & subcutaneous disease; musculoskeletal, connective tissue & bone disorders; kidney & urinary tract disease; local reactions at inj site, edema, thrombophlebitis.
Drug Interactions
Mg- or Al-containing antacids, didanosine, sucralfate, Fe or Zn-containing agents; glibenclamide, neuroleptics, certain antimalaria agents, azole antifungal, macrolide, terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, anti-arrhythmia class IA & III, anticoagulants.
