Indications/Uses
Treatment of influenza in adults & childn ≥1 yr when influenza virus is circulating in the community. Post exposure prevention in adults & childn ≥1 yr following contact w/ a clinically diagnosed influenza case when influenza virus is circulating in the community. Seasonal prevention in adults & childn ≥1 yr in exceptional situations (eg, in case of mismatch between the circulating & vaccine virus strains, & a pandemic situation).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, adolescent or childn >40 kg Treatment 75 mg twice daily for 5 days w/in the 1st or 2nd day of onset of symptoms. Post-exposure prevention 75 mg once daily for 10 days w/in 2 days of exposure to an infected individual. Prevention during an influenza epidemic in the community 75 mg once daily for up to 6 wk. Renal impairment CrCl >30 mL/min Treatment 75 mg twice daily. Prevention 75 mg once daily. CrCl >10-≤30 mL/min Treatment 75 mg twice daily. Prevention 75 mg every 2nd day.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Convulsion & delirium-like neuropsychiatric events. Monitor for signs of abnormal behaviour in childn & adolescents. Not a substitute for flu vaccine. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, headache & pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased exposure w/ probenecid. Use w/ caution when taking renally-excreted agents w/ narrow therapeutic margin (eg, chlorpropamide, methotrexate, phenylbutazone).
