Human monocomponent isophane (NPH) insulin human (recombinant DNA origin)
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Individualized dosage. Usual dose: 0.3-1 IU/kg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Episodes of hypoglycemia.
Special Precautions
Inadequate dosage or treatment discontinuation may lead to hyperglycaemia. In type 1 diabetes, untreated hyperglycaemic events lead to diabetic ketoacidosis. Omission of meals or unplanned strenuous exercises may lead to hypoglycaemia. Concomitant illness, especially infections & feverish conditions, usually increases the patient's insulin requirement. Diseases affecting the adrenal, pituitary or thyroid gland. Transferring to other insulin products should be done under strict medical supervision. Continuously rotate inj site to help reduce or prevent reactions. Patient should consult physician before travelling between different time zones. Not to be used in insulin infusion pumps. Contains metacresol which can cause allergic reaction. Cases of CHF have been reported when thiazolidinediones were used in combination w/ insulin. Thiazolidinediones should be discontinued if any symptoms of deterioration in cardiac function occurs. Do not administer IV. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery as a result of hypoglycaemia. Hepatic or renal impairment. No restrictions on treatment of diabetes w/ insulin during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia. Anaphylactic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Oral antidiabetic products, MAOIs, nonselective β-blocking agents, ACE inhibitors, salicylates, anabolic steroids & sulphonamides may reduce insulin requirement. OCs, thiazides, glucocorticoids, thyroid hormones, sympathomimetics, growth hormone & danazol may increase insulin requirements. β-blocking agents may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia & delay recovery from hypoglycemia. Octreotide/lanreotide may either increase or decrease insulin requirement. Alcohol may intensify or reduce hypoglycemic effect of insulin.
