Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Adrenocortical function abnormality, collagen disease, allergic conditions, skin & resp tract inflammation, hematologic disease, cancer-related hypercalcemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 4-48 mg/day as a single or in divided doses. Multiple sclerosis 160 mg/day for 1 wk, followed by 64 mg every other day for 1 mth. Childn Adrenocortical insufficiency 0.117 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses. Other indications 0.417-0.167 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections. Prolonged use in duodenal & peptic ulcers, severe osteoporosis, history of psychoses, herpes; recent vaccination.
Special Precautions
Latent TB; hypothyroidism, cirrhosis; ocular herpes simplex. May mask clinical symptoms of disease infection. Prolonged use. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant & childn.
Adverse Reactions
Electrolyte & fluid imbalance, muscle weakness, reduced resistance to infection, impaired wound healing, increased BP, cataract, growth retardation in childn, adrenal insufficiency, Cushing's syndrome, osteoporosis, gastric ulcer.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs, antiemetics, antidiabetics, vaccine.
