Clindamycin
Indications/Uses
Severe infections caused by susceptible gm+ve organisms particularly Staph, Strep & pneumococci.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Serious infection Adult 150-300 mg every 6 hr. May increase to 300-450 mg every 6 hr. Childn 8-16 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. May increase to 16-20 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. Infections due to Streptococcus β-haemolyticus Continue therapy for ≥10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin.
Special Precautions
History of asthma or other allergic reactions, history of GI disease especially colitis. Atopic individuals. Severe renal or hepatic disease. Conduct regular bowel endoscopies, liver & renal function tests & blood counts on long-term use. Pregnancy & lactation. Neonates.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea (discontinue immediately), GI disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, neutropenia, leucopenia, agranulocytosis, jaundice, polioarthritis, superinfection (prolonged use).
Drug Interactions
Neuromuscular blockers, anesth, erythromycin.
