Theophylline
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 caplet, childn >6 yr ½ caplet. To be taken 2 times daily in the morning & evening.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Gastric ulcer, diabetes.
Special Precautions
Liver disease, epilepsy, hypoxemia, hypertension, history of gastric ulcers. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhoea, palpitations, insomnia. In childn: haematemesis, CNS stimulation, diaphoresis, fever.
Drug Interactions
May enhance excretion of lithium & effects of anticoagulants. Cimetidine, allopurinol, erythromycin, propranolol, troleandomycin & OC can increase serum theophylline levels. Rifampicin, ephedrine. Avoid concomitant use w/ other xanthine prep.

R03DA04 - theophylline ; Belongs to the class of xanthines. Used in the systemic treatment of obstructive airway diseases.
