Indications/Uses
Inflammatory & allergic reaction, rheumatic disorders which respond to corticosteroid therapy, adrenocortical function abnormality, collagen disease, herpetiform & exfolliative dermatitis, nephrotic syndrome, blood disorder, adjuvant therapy in neoplastic disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
DWS 10-40 mg IM/IV. May be repeated accordingly. High dose therapy: 30 mg/kg, given in at least 30 min. Dose can be repeated every 4-6 hr. Acute exacerbation in multiple sclerosis 160 mg daily for a wk followed by 64 mg daily for a mth. Acute spinal injury 30 mg/kg IV infusion for 15 min followed by 45 min infusion, 5.4 mg/kg/hr for 23 hr. Adjuvant therapy for AIDS related to Pneumocytis carinii 30 mg IV twice daily for 1st-5th day, followed by 30 mg once daily on 6th-10th day, then 15 mg once daily on day 11-21. Childn & infant Adrenocortical insufficiency 117 mcg/kg IM or 3.33 mg/m2 daily in 3 divided doses every 3 days, or 39-58.5 mcg/kg or 1.11-1.66 mg/m2 once daily. Acute spinal injury 30 mg/kg IV infusion for 15 min followed by 45 min infusion, 5.4 mg/kg/hr for 23 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Systemic fungal infection, active peptic or duodenal ulcer, severe osteoporosis, herpes, vaccination. Premature babies.
Special Precautions
Active or latent TB. Avoid high dose in childn, use alternate day therapy. May cause HTN during therapy in elderly. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Adrenocortical insufficiency, muscle pain or fatigue, Na retention, subcapsular cataract, endocrine disorder, headache, vertigo, skin atrophy, allergic dermatitis.
Drug Interactions
Barbiturate, phenytoin, rifampin, NSAIDs, vaccines, cyclosporine, troleandomycin, anticholinesterase.
