Ketoconazole
Indications/Uses
Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis not responsive to nystatin or other drugs eg, vag, GI, oral candidiasis (oral thrush, perleche).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 200 mg daily as single dose. Vag candidiasis 400 mg once daily for 5 days. Duration of treatment: Oral thrush 10 days. Aspergillosis, systemic candidiasis 1-2 mth. Histoplasmosis, paracoccidioidomycosis 2-6 mth. Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis 2-18 mth. Childn >2 yr 5 mg/kg as single daily dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute liver dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Monitor hepatic enzyme levels in patients w/ history of liver disease. Adrenal insufficiency. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Rifampicin & INH. Concomitant administration w/ antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, anticholinergic agents, warfarin, cyclosporin.
