Meropenem
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia, nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal, gynaecological, skin & skin structure, bone & joint infections. Meningitis, septicemia, endocarditis. Empiric treatment for suspected infection in adult patient w/ febrile neutropenia (as a mono- or combined therapy w/ antiviral or antifungal agents).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Pneumonia, UTI, gynaecological infection (eg, endometritis), skin & skin structure infection 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, presumed infection in patient w/ neutropenia, septicemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly, childn >50 kg Adult dose. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Renal impairment CrCl 26-50 mL/min 1 unit dose 12 hrly, 10-25 mL/min ½ unit dose 12 hrly, <10 mL/min ½ unit dose 24 hrly.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
May cause overgrowth of nonsensitive microorganisms; hepatic impairment; methicillin-resistant staphylococci-caused infections. Co-administration w/ nephrotoxic drugs. CNS disorders, bacterial meningitis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation, thrombophlebitis, pain at inj site; abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis; reversible thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia, increased serum conc eg, bilirubin, transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, lactase dehydrogenase alone or combination; headache, paresthesia; oral & vag candidosis.
